Lending, Projections for Fed Rate Increase among Topics at Insights & Outlooks

by Catalyst Corporate | Jan 04, 2022

With loan growth projected to top seven percent in 2022, a quick analysis of loan pricing and spreads could be helpful for credit unions looking for the potential of stronger earnings.

It just so happens that loan pricing and spreads are among topics covered in Catalyst Corporate’s annual Insights & Outlooks webinar, which was broadcast on December 16 and is now available on demand. In a fast-moving hour, a team of balance sheet experts from Catalyst Corporate Federal Credit Union and Catalyst Strategic Solutions touched on a wide range of economic issues that include portfolio distribution, inflation and a new “Fed tightening cycle.”

Addressing the Fed’s projected interest rate increases, panelist Steven Houle said lessons can be learned by looking back to 2015 when the last rate hike cycle began. “Ask what happened then,” said Houle, who is Catalyst Strategic Solutions’ Vice President, Advisory Service. “Will we see more steepness on the long part of the yield curve based on what the Fed does on the short end?”

Houle was joined by Sarina Freedland, Senior Investment Officer, and Annie Scott, Manager - ALM Data & Model Administration. Mark DeBree, Managing Principal of Catalyst Strategic Solutions, facilitated the discussion that touched on key categories, such as assets, liabilities, earnings and capital, with an eye toward positioning credit unions for success in the coming year.
