Coming soon: more ACH rule changes & exciting news from Catalyst Corporate

April 1, 2020 | Redefined return reason codes R10 & R11 to be introduced. Nacha's next rule change – which will take effect tomorrow, April 1, 2020 – is an effort to more clearly differentiate unauthorized return reasons for consumer debits. As a result, Return Reason Code R10 will be defined as “Customer Advises Originator is Not Known to Receiver and/or Originator is Not Authorized by Receiver to Debit Receiver’s Account.” The definition of Reason Code R11 will change to “Customer Advises Entry Not in Accordance with the Terms of the Authorization.” More information on this upcoming rule change can be found at

July 1, 2020 | ACH Contact Registration. Nacha is currently in the process of developing the ACH Contact Registry, an industry-wide database intended to help financial institutions more readily connect with one another on ACH operations, exceptions and risk management. Beginning July 1, 2020, all financial institutions participating in the ACH Network will be required to register contact information with Nacha for personnel or departments responsible for ACH operations and fraud/risk management. Registration will be conducted via the Risk Management Portal, and all contact information must be submitted by October 30, 2020. Find out more

June 30, 2021 | Supplementing data security requirements. This rule – which will be implemented in two phases – adds stricter requirements to protect account numbers used in the initiation of ACH entries. Nacha recently extended both of the effective dates of this rule change by one year. Phase one, which applies to Originators and Third-Parties with more than six million ACH payments annually, will now take effect on June 30, 2021. Phase two, which applies to Originators and Third-Parties with more than two million ACH payments annually, is now effective on June 30, 2022. Additional details are available via Nacha's website.
